What Is a 2 or 3 with Jesus Meeting?
This is a meeting with Jesus of 2, 3 (or maybe 4) Christians from a believer’s Christian Inner Circle for 1½ to 2 hours. The meeting can be in person, on a phone conference call with speaker mode enabled, or via a video option like Zoom. Something good to eat or a cup of coffee or tea adds comfort to the serious business at hand. The non-threatening format of limited or no discussion creates an atmosphere for open communication without criticism. Usually, the task is, working together, for each person to make her or his own list.
Before each “2 or 3 with Jesus Meeting” everyone who will participate should have listened to the short podcast on the specific Together of Scripture at HeavenBeckons.com that will be the focus of the meeting.
Each Matthew 18:20 Meeting stands alone. So, the same people can meet for another meeting about another Together of Scripture with the same or a different combination of 2 or 3 people. It would be great for the Kingdom of God if after one or two of these tiny meetings, each person invited one or two others for such a meeting. The original three would become three separate Matthew 18:20 Meeting and 9 people would be growing to be more like Jesus. This would multiply the number of Christians preparing to glorify God more by becoming more like Jesus and getting ready to eventually enter heaven for enhanced eternal life.
The purpose of limiting discussion is to make the meeting as safe as possible. In communication with Jesus, Christians will make lists is to open their minds to areas that are not yet enough like Jesus. Instead of discussion, it is left for the Holy Spirit to convict and guide God’s process of conforming His people to the image of Jesus (see Romans 8:29). The intent of these meetings is to expand our understanding of changes the Holy Spirit might be urging.
Larger fellowships like small groups and deeper friendship times together are for going deeper into specific areas of change. But these meetings are to be safe so that even the most fragile believer can see possible changes into godliness (Christlikeness) and their present and heavenly benefits with little personal risk. Yet, even the bravest of Christians can be challenged in these simple meetings.
Usually it is a time of brainstorming regarding something God has asked us to be or do. In listening to God through His speaking in the Bible and in the quietness of your mind, things are identified that will lead to some change in thinking, feeling, or acting like Jesus.
There is a special presence of Jesus in a “2 or 3 with Jesus Meeting”. That is why He said, “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20) Of course, Jesus is present in small groups of 8 to 12 people as well as in whole congregations. But, intimacy comes in the tiny group. At a family reunion, we break off into tiny groups for more intimacy, personal sharing and understanding. Since a lot of these meetings are in silent talking and listening to Jesus, we need the Matthew 18:29 Meeting to be small to more easily hear Jesus.
When the Matthew 18:20 group starts to make a list, ideas will likely come fast. Each person should write down all of the contributions of the others, whether or not they seem to be correct or make sense at the time. To be able to write them all down, ask people to repeat during this flash of ideas. But, eventually there will be silences. And, these are the very special times when everyone listens for the Lord Jesus to speak and add things to the list. Jesus, who promised to be in the midst of two or three gathered in His name, will speak to your spirits during the silence. He will add more items to the list all of you together are making.
For example, the challenge might be stated by the party host, “What are some of the things most difficult to forgive? Let’s make a list of them.”
